My family is getting ready to do an amazing West Coast Road Trip, which I am excited to share with all of you when I get back. Right now, I am in the middle of trying to figure out what all to pack. The thing with a west coast road trip is you will encounter all types of weather, activities and more so you have to be prepared, but you also can’t pack your entire house with you. Today I am excited to share what I am packing for our west coast road trip for ME! That is right…what is going in MY suitcase!
See, as a mom, I usually end up packing up the entire family. And I will be honest, often times I have cute outfits lined up for all of my kids. But what about Mom? We need to look cute in all those photos and too! So today I am sharing what I am going to be packing for myself.

With two year old twins, and a 6 year old our van is going to be pretty full. We will need pack and plays (yes my two year olds still fit in pack and plays), hiking carrier packs, a stroller, and more. We have ways to save trunk space (read my tips HERE). That means, I have to find ways to save room when packing, even though I need to pack for all different types of climates and adventures. That is why I put a lot of thought into what I am packing for our west coast road trip.
What Clothing Am I Packing For Our West Coast Road Trip
Our road trip will take us everywhere from warm Southern California to Cool and Rainy Redwoods and more. We will hit up theme parks, be hiking, and hitting the beach, just to start. So what clothing am I packing and how am I saving space.
To start, I am packing several t-shirts of different colors. I am choosing mostly solid colored shirts for simplicty reasons but I do like to throw in one or two cute tops that have patterns or a fun design.
Can I just take a moment to say how much I dislike having my photo taken? I would rather show you guys pictures of my cute kids, or beautiful landscapes. But moving on, I absolutely love this top I got from Lane Bryant. I am taking it because it will go great with capris, but it is also long enough (and loose enough) to go with leggings. I put a long layering tank underneath it because it is a little lowcut on this 5’4″ frame, but I think on someone a little taller it will be fine without a tank under. I also love that the pattern/texture isn’t overwhelming.
The other item I am packing is a cute overpiece. A cute cardigan, wrap, or similar overpiece can let you dress up just a plain old t-shirt and jeans outfit. Which means I don’t have to pack a whole new outfit if we decide to go to a nice dinner. I mean, obviously, we won’t be doing anything too fancy with 3 kids in tow, but we might do a few things where I want to look a little nicer.
See, a simple overpiece made me look a little bit nicer than just a plain old t-shirt and jeans would. I definitely am not going to a super fancy restaurant but I think I could feel great sitting down at Disneyland’s fancier dining options like this.
I am also going to pack multi-use bottoms. What? Yeah, you read that right. Maybe you have a pair of pants that you can roll the legs and have a cuffed pair of capris. For me, I am taking several pants that let you roll them to different lengths (and have tabs to keep them the different lengths). I try to pack all of my bottoms in neutrals so that I can wear any shirt with them. Grays, blacks, blue jeans and khaki color bottoms are my favorites.
Speaking of jeans…
I have a new favorite jean I am definitely going to be packing. Lane Bryant’s Boot Jean with T3 Tighter Tummy Technology. I seriously love these jeans. Let me explain why by showing you a picture from a previous vacation…
Okay, maybe you can’t see it in that one… Let me find you another one…
Do you see it? Yeah… See, having twins changed my body. I have always been plus sized, but after my twin pregnancy, I have had this “apron” of skin. Actually 2 of them. I never had that before. And often times, the top one is super obvious in pictures unless I do some creative cropping or where shirts that hide it.
These jeans though…oh my gosh! They have a panel that actually holds my tummy in. And because they have a high waisted option, it even covers the top flap of skin and holds it in.
Look- no aprons
In addition to my tops and bottoms, and of course my regular under garments, I am going to be sure to take a sweatshirt, and a jacket. The redwoods can be a bit cold and rainy. My jacket will be one that is water resistant so I don’t have to worry about getting drenched.
Because Mike is recovering from some health issues (bronchitis) we will not be doing any major hikes in the Redwoods. This is great because I am able to cut down on my footwear. I will only have to pack my Chacos for Disneyland and days we do easy, flat hikes and then tennis shoes for longer hikes and rainy days.
What Personal Items To Pack for A West Coast Road Trip
We all know the regular personal items that need to be packed right? Deodorant, shampoo, blah, blah, blah…. I don’t want to go over those same old same old items.
Instead I want to share with you the items that I will be taking that might be a little different.
I have curly hair. For the longest time I straightened my hair…ALWAYS. No exceptions. But my hair is currently the longest it has ever been…well, it was before I got my hair cut a few months ago and cut off 4 inches. But it is still really long for me. Too long to take the time to straighten every day, so I have been trying to embrace my curls.
Hitting up different climates and humidity can do a number on curly hair. So I will be taking some special hair items that I have found help when I am in more humid climates.
I don’t like to spend a fortune on hair products so I love TRESemmé and their Keratin Smooth. It helps keep my hair from getting frizzy but it doesn’t make it crunchy or stiff. I absolutely love it. I don’t normally use product at home, so I love that this doesn’t feel like my hair is weighed down with “gunk” in it.
My other personal must take item is all about the makeup. I don’t normally where much makeup, but when we are on vacation, I do like to wear some so that I look halfway decent in vacation photos. But when I am at theme parks all day, it is hard to keep my makeup looking fresh.
Now I don’t normally shop for brands that I can’t find at Walgreens or Target, but I LOVE Urban Decay’s All Night Setting Spray. I make special trips to Sephora or Ulta just for that and my mascara (Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash if you are wondering). That way if I choose to wear some foundation and blush to the parks, I can wear it without worrying about it coming off by mid-day. You can buy it with the eye primer (which I also love for the rare occasions when I wear eye shadow) off Amazon if you don’t have time to get to a store that carries it.
Can’t wait to share more of our west coast road trip with you. Are you heading anywhere on vacation soon? What are you packing or what packing tips do you have? Share them in the comments below.
