When I found out I was having twins, we had to get a bigger vehicle. I swore I would never get a minivan. I wanted a small SUV with 3 rows. No way was I driving a mom wagon around town. Well, when we finally went car shopping, we couldn’t find a used SUV in our budget that we liked. But there were plenty of minivans.
So I gave in and test drove one. And I fell in love. I loved my minivan. It wasn’t super fancy. It was a base model of a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country that we were buying in 2015. It had 80,000 miles on it. But we were paying cash, and it was clean, and it ran well.
We bought it and I loved it. We had a bench seat for the second row which worked perfectly. We could put both infant seats there, and then there was still a spot for our oldest to go to the back easily, as well as my mother-in-law when she rode with us. It was nice, but when we thought we would be having another baby, we knew we would need to upgrade. See we often take my mother-in-law places with us, so the van wouldn’t cut it anymore.
Even though we ended up not having another kid at the moment, we still ended up selling our van and buying a used Suburban (from my parents). We just took it on our first big road trip from Seattle to San Diego and after over 3300 miles I can tell you there are a lot of things I miss about my van. So pay attention if you are debating between a van or large SUV, or if you are thinking about getting rid of your van. You may miss these things.
Five Reasons I Miss My Minivan
1. Cup Holders
My minivan had 10 cup holders just for the driver and passenger. TEN!!!! That is so awesome for road trips when you may go through several drinks. Like have a can of soda, a water bottle, then my husband chews sunflower seeds while driving so he has a cup to spit shells in, etc.
You know how many cup holders my suburban has up front. TWO! Not even enough for us each to have a can of soda and a water bottle. Oh and the compartments in the doors are way to small to fit a water bottle in so don’t get any ideas about putting it there.
2. Store In The Floor
I miss my store in the floor. Especially on this road trip. When packing our suburban for the trip we had a lot of little things we usually put in the floor like our car emergency kit, a container of creams for diaper rashes, eczema, etc, and extra diapers and wipes that we always put in the floor. Well, we didn’t have that storage during this trip. And I missed it!
On top of that, the seats of the van could fold flat into the floor. Our Suburban seats don’t do that. Why don’t suburban seats do that? That would be so smart. Maybe newer ones do??? Because if they don’t I think that is silly. People expect to be able to haul things in their suburbans, but when your seats don’t fold flat it is hard.
3. Sliding Doors
If you have small kids, you may know that they tend to just throw the doors open and that can sometimes be an issue in parking lots. I miss sliding doors that I didn’t have to worry about my kids throwing the door open and hitting another car. Newer vans even have remote open so you don’t have to worry about trying to open the doors with your hands full (ours did not have it anyways).
4. The Gas Mileage
That 3300 mile road trip… Gas was SO EXPENSIVE! It cost double what it would have in our van. I miss the gas mileage our van got. We averaged 28 miles per gallon in our minivan on highways. The Suburban, we averaged 14. Granted, that included a lot of mountain passes, so maybe our minivan would have been closer to 23 miles per gallon, but still. Over 3300 miles, that makes a huge price difference.
5. Fitting Into Narrow Parking Spots
I miss fitting into narrow parking spots. I know my van couldn’t fit into a compact spot, but there are some places around here with very narrow parking spots (the hospital for starters) and I miss being able to easily fit into them. I have gotten pretty good at squeezing my suburban into tight spots, but it still is a chore at some older parking lots/garages.
Have you traded in your minivan? Do you miss anything about it?
