As summer winds down I always have mixed feelings. Excitement for the structure of the school year, a feeling of needing to pack in all of the fun possible into those last few weeks of summer, and the stress of completing everything I need to before the new school year starts. Back to School is a busy time for families, and with that there can be a lot of stress. Today I am confessing some of the mistakes I have made during Back to School time to help you avoid them, and to help ease some of the stress you might have during Back to School.
Tips To Ease Back To School Stress & Avoid These Mistakes
While I am sharing some of the mistakes I made, be sure you read through because I am also sharing some of my best tips that I have learned because of these mistakes. Back to School time doesn’t have to be stressful.
The schedule – write it down!
One of my biggest mistakes I have made during back to school time involves the schedule. I used to have this amazing memory, but I learned when my oldest was going into first grade and I had two-year-old twins that mommy brain is a real thing.
I made the mistake of scheduling a lot of appointments to get done before the school year started, like many of us do, but I never wrote them down. I missed 2 appointments to meet the teacher that year. Be sure that you have a planner or wall calendar, or even an e-calendar on your phone, that you utilize as you try to finish up all the appointments, registration, and more.
Minimize the Back to School shopping
Back to School shopping can be a headache if you are running to twenty different stores. You may end up spending more in gas then the few cents you save on each pack of crayons, and then not to mention the amount of time and stress from running all over town.
I gave up on the idea of running all over a few years ago and my stress level went way down. I am so grateful that there are stores like Walmart where you can purchase everything in one stop. From school supplies to clothing to food for lunches, it really cuts out the stress if I can do all my shopping in one stop.
The school supply list
Be sure to bring your school supply list with you when doing your back to school shopping. If possible, I also suggest emailing teachers to see if they have any specific items not on the list. Last year, we purchased tons of pencils, only to find out our son’s teacher preferred to supply pencils herself. Thankfully, we use pencils a lot at home, and I have a bin of school supplies we keep on hand, but it can be stressful to find out you purchased things you didn’t need, or worse, there is more you need when you thought you were done.
Lunches – be prepared
Don’t wake up the first day of school only to realize you are not prepared to pack a lunch for your child. Yeah, this happened to me one year. OOPS!
While you are shopping at Walmart (you know, so you don’t have to run all over town) be sure to head over and stock up on your kids’ favorite lunch items. Bonus, many of my kids’ favorite items are part of the Walmart Back To School Sweepstakes (more info on this below).
As a parent I know there are foods my kids will eat so I don’t have to worry that they are going hungry. I now know to stock up on things like Del Monte Bubble Fruit. These are easy to grab (so if we are running late, no worries) and my kids love the fruit and boba bubbles add fun to their meal. My kids love them and are always excited when they get them in their lunches.
Get some sleep
My kids have been loving staying up late in the summer, but I have learned the hard way how hard it is to go back to the earlier bed time once school starts. Begin easing your kids into that earlier bedtime routine a week or so before school starts. Do not wait until the night before.
The ever-important first day of school photo
Don’t forget to grab a first day of school photo, but don’t stress over it. One year I totally beat myself up for not having printed out one of those cute signs. Then I had an idea and quickly handed my son a blank piece of paper. I later used the photo editor on my phone to add the text for the school year. But you know what… even that wasn’t necessary. Cut yourself some slack. Miss taking the picture in the morning? Take it when your kids get home. Give yourself a break from stressing over making the first day of school perfect.
