Sometimes you want to travel but worry about the cost. Check out this great budget friendly hotel in Salt Lake City for a great family get away. The Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City, Utah is the perfect fit for families who want all the best, but without the cost.
My family was supposed to head to Disneyland the first week in October. Beginning of September, my husband ended up in the hospital. We ended up having to cancel our Disneyland trip (insert a sad face emoji here). I was still bit by the travel bug and was trying to think where we could go that would not cost an arm and a leg, and would not be to far from home and therefore not need a full week vacation. I realized, even though it is only 4 1/2 hours away, my family had not been to Salt Lake City in years… like since before I had the twins.
So, I decided it was time to get back to Salt Lake City. The original plan was my entire family would go, but when my husband had a relapse in his health issue (don’t worry, he is totally fine now) I decided to let him stay home and have his mom take care of the twins while I took just my oldest son to Salt Lake City with me. I am going to be sharing more on the experience of choosing to travel with just one child soon, but for now, I just needed to share the back story so you can understand the hotel situation.
Before I begin, thank you to Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City, Utah for hosting our stay. While our stay was compensated, all opinions are my own, and my honest opinion.
Why Families Will Love Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City, Utah
So, The Goof and I got a late start driving down to West Valley City, Utah and the Salt Lake City area. He had a big certification at swimming lessons that day, so we stuck around for that, had dinner, and also had to get a few other things done. Add on to that road construction and a detour, we were barely pulling into the Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City by midnight. Ouch! Not exactly how you want to start out vacation. I was exhausted, and so was The Goof.
I got into the lobby, with my seven-year old son with severe ADHD who had just spent 5+ hours in the car. Needless to say he is bouncing around and here I am trying to get checked in, when the guy at the front desk says “I see your reservation but…. I don’t have a room for you.” WHAT? My head starts going through all the different scenarios. We were kind of on a tight budget for this trip (that looming hospital bill and all). I was worried we would be stuck searching for a hotel room, and we all know how expensive last minute rooms can be.
We originally had a standard 2 queen room. I told the guy, I can even take a one bed room, though not preferred. He said, he would see what he could find me, as I excused myself to the lobby restroom. When I came back, the gentleman at the desk said “Okay, I found you a room. We will be putting you in a family suite.” Perfect.
Now I had stayed in other Country Inn & Suites, so when I heard family suite, I thought it meant a separate bedroom with a king bed, and then a living area with pullout sofa. That is what my previous experience with this hotel chain had been. That would work great for us since it was just the two of us.
Now here is why this hotel is awesome for families…
I was completely wrong about the suite. We open the door and I was not met with a living area. I was met with a super large room with 2 queen beds, a sleeper sofa, and a mini kitchen/wet bar area. A door went into a HUGE bathroom (with a jetted tub!) and another door went to a separate bedroom with a king bed, work space, and it’s own TV and door to the shared bathroom. You guys, this room could have easily slept 8! And the room still had plenty of space for a pack and play (or two).
On top of the awesome family suite that is perfect for large families, the hotel had a great indoor swimming pool. I will say, the pool was a bit cool for my liking, but once you got in, it was fine. I just like mine a tad warmer. It also had a nice sized hot tub. We loved being able to hit the pool in the afternoon or evening. There were plenty of pool towels and pool chairs as well. I wish they had tables in the pool area to put your room key and phone on, instead of having to put them on the chair or the ground.
Of course, families on a budget love a free hotel breakfast. We really enjoyed the hot continental breakfast. I loved that there were lots of healthy options like fresh fruit. The breakfast was really good and the dining area was super clean.
So we were in Salt Lake City on a long weekend, but my son still needed to do his twenty minutes a day of reading. Guess what this mom did not pack. Books! I was so thankful to find that the Country Inn and Suites in West Valley City had a little library, or bookshelf, in the lobby. While many of the books were for older kids or adults, there were definitely some choices for my little reader.
What You Might Not Love
So I always give my honest opinion, including the good and the not-so-good. So what might you not like about this hotel?
The hotel is in a very industrial area. The main street shops feel very dated and worn down. However, once you go down Decker Lake (where the hotel is) the buildings and area are much nicer. Also there is a lot of construction on the freeways and major roads in this area.
It is a bit of a drive to anything in downtown Salt Lake City or farther north (like Lagoon). So if these are areas you plan to visit, just realize you may need thirty minutes or more to get to different areas. But there is still plenty to do near the hotel, so don’t feel like there is nothing around.
What Is Nearby The Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City, Utah
So what is nearby this hotel?
Directly accross the street is a Chili’s and an IHOP. The Goof and I walked across the street to Chili’s for dinner one night. There is also a donut shop near the hotel called Donut Boy. My friend brought us donuts from it on day 2 and they were delicious.
Gardner Village is a favorite spot for my family to visit. It has a lot of fun little shops and was all decked out for Halloween and had lots of fun activities for kids and adults a like. It was about a 15 minute drive away.
We chose to stay in West Valley City because it was closer to some people that we wanted to meet up with and because we liked that it was away from the hustle and bustle of Salt Lake City but still close enough to get to the things we wanted to do. We also loved that the hotels in West Valley City are more budget and family friendly. The Country Inn & Suites in West Valley City is a great budget friendly option, especially for larger families. Be sure to check them out when planning your next Salt Lake City area vacation.
