If you are planning a Disney Vacation for 2013, you might be looking for a way to save some extra money, or somewhere for kids to put the money they are saving.

When I first started this blog I shared this tutorial, and I thought maybe I would share it again. We are constantly saving for Disney, and so all of our spare change goes into our Disney Fund Jar. Earlier this year I made one for my little sister as she wants to go to Disney World in the next few years. I love this “bank” and ours is still intact 5 years later. So enjoy this blast from a past, laugh at the old Love Our Disney watermark…hahahahaha….and then have fun making your jar to save for Disney!

Years ago I made this:

Recently my sister decided that before she feels old turns 30 she would like to go to Disney World. (Our family lives in Idaho, and therefore visits Disneyland, none of us have been to Disney World)
We are going to tag along with her on the trip, but I thought for fun, and since I had the supplies, I would make her a Disney Fund Jar of her own and make a tutorial for others to be able to make their own as well.

For this project you will need
  • 2 12″x12″ pieces of scrapbook paper (2 different prints)
  • Letter Stickers
  • Character Stickers of your choosing
  • A spare piece of cardstock or colored paper (Aproximately 4″x4″)
  • One of these containers (you can find at the dollar store)
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper Cutter
  • Scrapbook tape/glue if you don’t like using mod podge to hold paper in place
  • If desired- extra stickers and distressing ink
Start with your lid. Since the lid pops off you don’t “need” to do this, but I still like to.
I don’t worry about making it perfect or anything, just big enough to fit quarters and/or folded up bills in.
Another un-neccessary step, but I had some stickers made for the edge of a scrapbook page, so I ran them around the edge of the lid for some added Disney fun. (It is one continuous sticker. I didn’t place a bunch of small stickers on the lid.)
Now the lid is done.
Next you need to cut your paper to the right height. I have mine go from under the lip to right where the bottom starts to curve under. For the size container I have here it is 5 3/4″.
Now you need to start applying the paper. Because of the shape of the container, it is best to have sections that are only 2-3″ wide the first time you do this project. I just tear my pages (back tear) to make it more fun. The good thing with Disney stuff, is it is fun, so nothing has to be perfect. Be sure to put each piece on as you tear it. Use just a tiny bit of mod podge, tape, or any glue to stick it in place at this point.

Alternate between your 2 different types of paper. As you go around, if your container has little plastic things that stick out under the lip, just put a tiny cut or tear in the paper and slide it around the plastic. Do this all the way around the container.
Next you will want to make your label.

Take any piece of Cardstock, colored printer paper, etc and cut it to the size you want. I just eye ball it, but this one was 3.5 inches wide and 2.75 inches long.
I used distressing ink around the edges and to give the paper an older used feel, since I had ripped the other paper I felt it just looked better this way.
Next use stickers to name your jar. This one has my sister’s name on it. I then added a few stickers as it had some bare spots. You can also wait, and have your character sticker cover part of the label. Again, because it is Disney, and supposed to be fun, I didn’t worry about using straight lines for the words, and had them be funky and fun. If you prefer straight lines- do it that way, but don’t feel like you have to.
Alternatively, you can use your computer to design and print the label rather than using the stickers. It is great for if you don’t have stickers, are making several of these (and therefore would need LOTS of stickers to have enough of every letter), or if you can’t find stickers with a font you like.
Attach your label to your container using glue, scrapbooking tape or a small dab of mod podge.
Next add your character stickers. I had this one of a marching Mickey Mouse I put on here. On the other side I put some Disney balloons. Behind it I put one of Mickey and his friends on a train. (You will see these in later pictures.)
Now it is time to mod podge. Use your paint brush to evenly apply mod podge to the entire jar. Watch for edges of paper that might bubble as you apply it and be sure to use the handle of the paint brush to flatten them. Let the mod podge dry. If needed, apply a second coat.
After you are done applying mod podge, put the lid on and you are finished.

Happy Savings!
