This year has been unlike any other! But one thing that hasn’t changed this year is how much I love the holiday season. While the holidays may look a little different, I am still trying to enjoy them to the fullest, making memories with my family, and letting those I love but can’t be around, know I am thinking of them. Today I am excited to share some simple, DIY Gift ideas for neighbors and friends, plus free printable gift tags that are designed just for 2020!
If you are like me, you probably are not heading out a lot of places these days. One great thing about 2020 is that Walmart’s Online Pickup and Delivery has become a regular thing, and you can pick up a lot more than just your groceries. In fact, almost every item I used in these gift ideas was ordered on the Walmart App and delivered right to my door!
Three Simple and Sweet DIY Gifts For Neighbors and Friends
Even though I won’t be having parties with my neighbors and friends, I wanted to let them know I care about them. So I made three gifts that focused on what different people in my life love, but the one thing that ties all these gifts together is Ghirardelli.
I can visualize you rolling your eyes at me, but I am not even joking. Ghirardelli has always been a big part of our holidays, and I have fond memories around some of their delicious offerings.
Simple DIY Gift Idea for the Baker In Your Life
The holidays are all about baking, and I have one friend who always asks me to bake my chocolate chip cookies for her. I have a secret recipe I never share with anybody, but it includes using Ghirardelli Bittersweet 60% Cacao Baking Chips. I feel that using high-quality ingredients makes everything taste better and Ghirardelli prides itself on their Bean to Bar quality – or in this case, Bean to Chip.
For this DIY, I included a set of spatulas with wood handles, some kitchen towels, and an oven mitt in holiday colors.
I saved the flat potholders and some spatulas for another gift. I took the red spatula and cut some vinyl lettering with the words “Merry and Bright” in a pretty font.
If you don’t have a vinyl cutting machine, you can also find holiday spatulas already made, I just knew that my friend uses the words “Merry and Bright” in a lot of her holiday decor and wanted those specific words.
(Note: If you use vinyl, and it is not dishwasher safe, be sure to write a note letting your recipient know this.)
After that, I designed and printed a recipe card. I used thick card stock, and yes… I gave my friend my secret recipe. 2020 has been a year, and I felt it was time to share it!
After that, I simply arranged the items, added the bag of Ghirardelli baking chips on top, and used jute twine to tie it all together.
I then attached one of the cute tags I designed, which you will be able to download a little bit further down.
DIY Gift Idea for the Farmhouse Decor Friend
I have a friend who loves Farmhouse decor, and so this year, she has started collecting and buying trees in burlap sacks and metal buckets. Fake trees mostly, though I saw some cute little live trees at Walmart that would be perfect for this.
This friend has been there for me for a long time, and last year, she took a trip with me to my favorite theme park when they kicked off the holidays. The hotel we stayed at had turndown service and every night they left Ghirardelli Caramel Squares for us. My friend, even though she loves Ghirardelli, saved hers to bring back for her kids.
I thought it might be fun this year to remind her of that trip, but to spoil her and let her indulge in Ghirardelli Caramel Squares and make the holidays “a bite better.”
This is a seriously simple, but cute gift idea.
I ordered a small box of lights, a beautiful faux tree, and this little metal bucket from Walmart. I had the ribbon on hand from last year.
I thought it would be cute to make the Ghirardelli squares the presents under the tree. I simply made stacks of them and tied a ribbon around them.
I also used some Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark to add variety.
Then I wrapped the lights in brown paper to use as the base.
I put the tree in the bucket, and put some green burlap ribbon in to fill in the dead space. I placed the bucket on the box, using removable tape. Then I used double-sided tape to attach the “presents” to the wrapped box, carefully putting it on the ribbon so that it wouldn’t rip off the wrapper when removed.
Lastly, I wrote a personal note and placed it in the bucket, and attached another one of my 2020 gift tags.
Sweet DIY Gift for the Hot Chocolate and Peppermint Lover
The last gift idea today is probably the cutest, but also the most sentimental for me.
My mother-in-law says one of her favorite things about the holidays is that Ghirardelli releases their Peppermint Bark Squares. This year I totally get what she meant. I decorated early because… 2020. But it still just didn’t quite feel like Christmas until I saw the Peppermint Bark Squares available on the Walmart App.
She also loves hot chocolate.
I found a cute snowman mug at Walmart, and I had this tray on hand, as well as some mason jars.
I painted the tray red and then cut some vinyl out to spell Hot Cocoa, and this cute mug. No vinyl cutting machine? Stickers work great too and can be found in most craft sections.
I then made up some of my family’s hot cocoa mix (if you don’t have your own recipe, you could include Ghirardelli’s Hot Cocoa mix because it is delicious).
I put the hot cocoa mix in the mason jar, added a pretty plaid fabric I had on hand and some jute, just to dress it up.
I then placed both the mug and the hot cocoa mix in the tray and filled the mug and empty space on the tray with Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark Squares.
The final touch was adding on another one of my 2020 Christmas Tags. I had designed a snowman one which was perfect for this gift!
