As 2015 comes to an end, we have a bright new year to look forward to. A new year is like a new chapter of our story, one that has not yet been written. Kind of like a choose your own adventure. When the pages are blank, and your pen (or computer keyboard) is at your finger tips, it can be a bit overwhelming. Often times there is so much that we would like to change or do, that we forget this new year is one chapter. When I was in high school, I had an English teacher that liked us to look at each chapter and find the theme for that chapter. She would say each chapter would have a theme, and that theme would contribute to the overall theme of the entire novel/story. I like to think about each year the same way.
2015 was a year of change for me and my family. From rebranding the blog, to welcoming twins, to adding our YouTube channel, and much more, the theme of 2015 was definitely change.
What will 2016 bring? I can not be sure, but at the beginning of the year, I can decide what I would like to try and focus on. For many people, the new year is a time for resolutions. A list of goals or changes they want to make. I don’t remember when I first read about it, but years and years ago I started hearing about a new “movement” in resolutions. Pick a single word to drive you through the new year.
One word. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with several resolutions (often unattainable, or over the top), we just choose one word. That word is our “driving force” for the year. Instead of saying one wants to lose 50 pounds in 3 months, one might choose the word health. Then, instead of trying to achieve this unreasonable goal, one might focus on things like being a little more active, spiritual health, making better eating choices, meditation. As you grow, the word you choose may come to mean even more to you. It will develop new layers of meaning to you, and you won’t fail if you don’t reach a specific number by a certain date.
One little word. It seems so easy. But at the same time it is so overwhelming. Looking at a year of unknowns and thinking “What word do I want to focus on to guide me during this year?” Especially when we often have no clue what the year will have in store for us. When I pick my word I think about what I admire about other people, and what I could focus on to become that type of person. What is one quality I wish I had? What could I do in my life to embrace that quality? What is something I have maybe slacked on but want to improve? Or in the case of my social media presence – what qualities or words do I want people to associate with me?
Joy. That is what I want people to think of me! I want them to know that the purpose of my life is to have joy, bring joy to others, and live a more joyful life. So my one little word this year is Joy!
There are YouTubers and Bloggers I admire a ton, and when I thought of why, it was because they are so positive, happy, and yep, full of Joy! That is a quality that I want in myself, and while I don’t think I am a negative person, I want to just be someone who when people think of me, they just think “Wow, she is SO HAPPY and full of JOY!”
I have a friend that I have known for almost 20 years, (side note, I can’t believe I can say that about someone I met in high school…I am getting old!) and she is seriously the most happy, joyful person in the world. Even when she is mad, she just sounds happy and upbeat. Even when she is going on a rant, it is in the happiest tone ever. That is what I want to be like.
So my one little word is joy! So this year, watch for joy to be an underlying theme of this blog, our YouTube channel, and all my social media outlets.
Now, share with me what your one little word will be! Or if you have a resolution you want to share, I would love to hear it. If you didn’t choose one little word before, will you be trying that now? And remember, it is okay to choose a word and set regular resolutions if you want. Maybe you can choose a word that is the theme of your resolutions. No matter what, share with me below your goals for the new year, or something you are looking forward to! Let’s make 2016 awesome and full of joy!
