Can you believe how fast the year is going by already? It is already the end of May! I feel like this year has gone by so fast. Remember when we were young and time seemed to move so slowly? Now that I am older, and have kids of my own, I feel like time just flies by. Because of that, I find that I want to make a lot of special memories with my kids every chance I get. Summer is one of my favorite times to make some family memories because we don’t have to worry about homework, or it being dark by the time my husband gets home. Nope. We get to enjoy each other and we can stay up late. But my favorite summer activity has to be taking road trips with my family. Today I am excited to share with you some of my favorite things about hitting the road, and then a super easy, DIY painted wood photo display.
Whether it is hitting up the beach, our favorite amusement park, a weekend camping, or even just a day trip to a near by lake, I love loading up the car and getting away with my family. And this summer will be no different. We plan to hit the road and go on some great adventures. With our suitcases, some ice cold Coca-Cola™ and Coca-Cola Zero™ and snacks from Target, and a great playlist, we are off. Adventure is out there and we will find it.
I love that a road trip, whether for the day, or a week, gives us a chance to bond as a family. Yes, some moments I want to pull my hair out (like when my 7 year old asks for the 10th time in 15 minutes if we are almost there) but for the most part, I love getting out there and making memories. I love that it gives us a chance to explore together, and to have some time talking and working as a family unit for a common goal. Maybe it is hiking up a mountain or floating down a river, or maybe even daring to go on that big roller coaster, but having these experiences together make us a stronger family unit.
Of course if you are like me, you have your phone and you take a bunch of photos because you want to remember these amazing moments. One thing I realized in our home is we rarely print out those photos and have them on display. I wanted to change that. So this last weekend I decided to get in gear and make a display for our photos. I wanted one that could easily change out photos and embraced our love of adventure. I had a piece of fencing that I decided would work perfectly and so I got to work and made this cute wood photo display.
I am absolutely in love with it!
Easy Hand Painted Wood Photo Display
What you will need to make this wood photo display:
- 4 foot piece of reclaimed wood. I used a fence post and cut off part of it.
- Sand paper
- Paint (in color of your choosing) and paint brush
- Carbon Paper
- Pencil or other writing utensil
- Mini clothespins
- Wood Glue
- Picture hanging kit
- Sealant (optional but highly recommend)
To start I took my piece of wood and cut it to 4 feet long. It was 6″ wide. I sanded it down so that it was nice and smooth. I loved the coloring of this piece of wood and so I didn’t stain it, but if you have a color you are not fond of, you could always stain or paint it to your liking.
After I sanded the wood board, I made sure to measure how long I wanted the text to be. Using a free online software I created the text and the design and printed it out on my computer. There are a lot of different software options you can use either online or on your computer. I chose a fun font that I felt embraced the phrase that I chose. “Adventure is out there.”
I had to use multiple pieces of paper, so I made sure to tape them together and line them up properly. Then I checked that they fit well on the board.
There are multiple ways you can transfer lettering to wood boards. Since I knew I wanted to create a hand painted wood photo display, I didn’t want anything too time consuming or something that would take a lot of time. So I chose to use carbon paper to transfer the image. I simply cut the carbon paper and taped it to the back of my design (carbon side away from the design paper) and then taped the whole thing on to the wood board.
Once it was attached to the wood, I took a pencil, marker, or okay… I used a crayon (you know, because that is what us parents have on hand half the time) and used it to press down and trace the design onto the wood.
Once you remove the paper the design should be transferred onto the wood board. If it isn’t perfect, don’t worry, you can touch it up in the next step.
I then used paint to go over the design. I actually used a paint pen to outline the design and then filled it in with paint. Then I went back and touched it up as needed. I was actually shocked it only took one coat of white paint to cover up the carbon image.
If you want, this is where I suggest you seal your wood board with a sealant. After I sealed it and let it dry, I attached the hanging kit to the back and then it was time to glue on the mini clothes pins.
I love how these look on the wood photo display. I spaced mine 5 inches a part with the two end ones being 4 inches in from each end. Spacing it this way allows me to put 2 4×4 photos next to each other. I like to print out my instagram photos to use and I print them as 4x4s.
I attached the mini clothes pins with wood glue. I placed wood glue on one side and firmly pressed them on.
All that was left to do was get some pictures off my phone to use on the display. Now you can easily print your own photos at home (I suggest using photo paper that you can pick up at Target) but you can also have your photos printed. If you print square photos, I suggest using a 4×4 inch print size.
Once you have your photos, all that is left to do is hang you display on the wall.
I seriously love how easy it is for us to change out these photos so that we can keep enjoying new adventures and sharing the memories in our home. And I love how personal I am able to make this wood photo display from the phrase, to the colors, and even to the pictures we choose to hang from it.
I can’t wait to get out and have some more adventures this summer with my family. If you are getting ready to head out, be sure to stop by Target and use this Cartwheel Offer for 20% off Share a Coke 20 oz Bottles. I love how fun it is to find one with my name, or the name of someone I love so I can Share an Ice Cold Coke with them. And now you can find 1,000 new Share a Coke names available and they even include last names! Look for the special display in your Target.
