Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Peach Loop. Today we are discussing zoos that your family needs to visit, including Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium.

The Henry Doorly Zoo is the world's BEST zoo, find out why!

One of my favorite, non-Disney roadtrips included a stop at the Henry Doorly Zoo. The zoo is located in Omaha, Nebraska. Not exactly a tourist destination (unless you happen to be LDS- in which case Winter Quarters is located here), but the zoo alone makes it worth the stop!

The Henry Doorly Zoo was deemed the World’s Best Zoo by Trip Advisor in 2014 and let me tell you, I can see why. Honestly, ever since we visited, other zoos have been kind of disappointing to me. Even San Diego had nothing on the Henry Doorly Zoo.

The zoo is huge! We spent an entire day there and still did not see everything. So plan on spending an entire day (or more) there. I also suggest purchasing the all day ride ticket so you can use the train, tram, and skyfari to see different parts of the zoo and get around.

The zoo is really cool because it has a lot of different domes that are different habitat environments, like the desert dome pictured above. You really feel like you are in that environment. Our absolute favorite environment was the Kingdoms of the Night. You felt like you were outside, maybe in a swamp land, in the middle of the night. It was really cool.

The Gorilla exhibit at the Henry Doorly Zoo is AMAZING!

I think the zoo is most famous for the Hubbard Gorilla Valley. This exhibit is AMAZING! It is a three acre exhibit where the zoo claims “the gorillas roam free and the visitors are on display.” It includes the little bubbles where you can poke your head in and feel like you are right there with the gorillas.

If you plan to visit the zoo, it can be quite spendy, but the good news is, they are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Reciprocal list. Which means, if your local zoo is also on the list, and you have a membership to your local zoo, you get discounted admission to the Henry Doorly Zoo. In fact, it gets you 50% off your admission.

Have you been to the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium? What did you think of it?

I love that gorilla picture! I could stand and watch the gorillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for HOURS – they are my absolute favorite. They’re so personable, don’t you think?

I really love zoos that have the immersion areas. I think I would actually spend my time in the dessert area. It is amazing how much activity there is for being so warm.
