Have you noticed a trend? People are opting away from buying things and choosing to instead experience life. I mean, just look at the movement of giving Experience Gifts. Families are starting to realize that family bonding and memories are more important than having the latest toys. Families are traveling more, but the reasons why vary from family to family. So why are families choosing to travel over other things they could be doing?
I will share with you the reasons my family travels, but I wondered if others traveled for the same reason, so I took an informal poll on the This Crazy Adventure Called Life Facebook page. After I share why my family travels, I will share with you some of the reasons those followers gave as to why they travel. Because maybe the reason we travel won’t resonate with you, but one of theirs will.
I Travel Because…
I haven’t always loved traveling… or maybe I have. I am not sure. Honestly, my family traveled a lot when I was little but about the time I started Junior High, our travels slowed down a lot. I am not sure if it was because my parents were nearing retirement, because most of my older siblings were out of the house, or because we had other things going on like jobs, summer music programs, and of course a higher work load at school, but whatever the reason, our travels basically stopped.
It wasn’t until a few years into my marriage that I began traveling regularly again. I mean, we took a honeymoon to Disneyland, but we didn’t travel regularly. We were young, poor newlyweds. But a few years in, we started doing little weekend trips. A trip to visit family here, a weekend at a national park there.
But it was after we had kids that we really fell in love with travel. You see, I travel because I get to create memories with my kids. Memories they will continue to have after I am gone. I get to create new experiences and help them see the world that they can’t see at home.
I travel because I only have 18 summers with my kids before they will be out of the house. And I have seen, not only from my youth, but friends with older kids, that as the summers dwindle down, the travel does too. Summers get filled with summer school, jobs, scout camp, time with friends, and a lot less travel. So I want to set make sure my family eats up the time while our kids are young and don’t have a bunch of their own plans.
I travel because that is the one time our family is able to mostly focus on each other. Yes, I write about travel so part of every vacation usually ends up being me sharing on social media or documenting things for this site, but we still have the lack of homework, appointments, work, swimming lessons, and other obligations to pull us in a million directions away from each other. It is a time we get to spend time doing things that are fun rather than telling our kids to do homework, fold their clothes, and clean up their toys.
I have learned that having a lot of things in our home adds stress to our family, but taking vacations and spending time together, eases it. For that reason, we have found we prefer to travel and have experiences rather than buy our kids toys.
My kids love to experience new things. In 2018 alone, my oldest tried horseback riding, sand boarding, and more! He is already building his bucket list of travel before he graduates.
Why Families Choose To Travel
Enough about me though right? What are some of the reasons other families choose to travel? I asked followers of my Facebook page to finish this sentence: “I/We travel because…”
What did they have to say? Here are just a few of the answers.
“We’d rather make memories with those we love than spend our money on things we don’t need.” ~ Heather S.
“Life should be adventure!” ~ Carol A.
“Because adventures teach us new things. We grow and can learn when we venture out of our comfort zone…plus it can be a lot of fun.” ~ Eve W.
“I want to see everything, experience everything, and eat everything!” ~ Melody R.
“Because it makes me better understand the world and hopefully a better citizen of it.” ~ Chris D.
Families are choosing to travel for a lot of the same reasons our family chooses to. Creating memories, seeking adventure, learning about the world, and bonding with those we love.
So why do you travel?
Wherever you travel, travel happy with Allianz Travel insurance. My family loves the annual plan to cover all of our travel through out the year. Share on social media why you travel and tag @Allianz so they can see your why.
I have a better question – why some families are choosing NOT to travel? I always try to use any given opportunity to visit a new place and travel the world. Traveling simply brings me too much joy 🙂
